Chartered College of Teaching announces appointment of President-Elect

The Chartered College Teaching Council has today (6th May) announced the appointment of Dr Steven Berryman FCCT CTeach as the next President of the Chartered College of Teaching.

Currently, Director of Arts, Culture and Community at Odyssey Trust for Education, Dr Berryman has 20 years of teaching experience and was one of the first people to gain Chartered Teacher Status. As President-Elect, Dr Berryman will work with the Presidential team and Council Members to ensure the experiences and insights of teachers are heard in the development of teaching policy.

The appointment of the Presiden-Elect is a rigorous process set out in the Chartered College Bye-Laws, involving an application process and interviews with the member-led Nominations Committee. Individuals were required to show their commitment to developing the profession’s expertise and support for the role of research and evidence in improving pupil outcomes. The Nominations Committee reviewed applications before a final recommendation was made to the Council ahead of a vote.

Following the decision, Dr Berryman said:

“I am thrilled to be the next President-Elect of the Chartered College of Teaching. The College continues to connect, celebrate and inspire teachers at all stages of their careers through wide engagement, high-quality professional learning and being a voice for the profession. We must continue to amplify the expertise of those in the classroom;  let’s make our collective voice even more powerful as we approach the educational challenges ahead.”

Dame Alison Peacock – Chartered College of Teaching CEO – welcomed the appointment:

“As the next President of the Chartered College, Steven will bring with him the expertise and insights he has developed throughout his career and his studies towards Chartered Status to benefit the wider membership and development of the Chartered College. I look forward to working with Steven, the Presidential team and Council to build on the successes of the Chartered College over these past five years and support more teachers to strengthen their professionalism for the benefit of students and broader society.

Dr Berryman will assume the office of President at the Chartered College AGM on 26th November.
